Your answers
The child must be under age 17 on December 31. The child must be your dependent, and usually lives with you for more than half the year. The child must have the required social security number.
For example, an older child or a qualifying relative, for whom you cannot claim the child tax credit. See IRS Pub. 501.
For example, the foreign tax credit or the education credits. This amount goes in the Step 3 total.
Fill this in if you want tax withheld on other income, such as interest, dividends or retirement income. Do not include pay from a job or self-employment.
If you skip this line, your withholding is based on the standard deduction. Fill it in if you expect deductions above the standard deduction.
Any extra tax you want withheld from each paycheck. It lowers your paycheck. It raises your refund or lowers what you owe.

Questions
What is a W-4?
A W-4 tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. You give it to your employer when you start a job, and when your situation changes.
Do I send the W-4 to the IRS?
No. Give the form to your employer. Your employer keeps it. The IRS does not want it.
Do I have to fill in Steps 2, 3 and 4?
No. Step 1 and Step 5 are the required steps. The form says to complete Steps 2 to 4 only if they apply to you. Otherwise, skip to Step 5.
What do I do if I have two jobs?
Do one thing in Step 2. Use the IRS estimator at www.irs.gov/W4App, which is the most accurate. Or use the Multiple Jobs Worksheet. Or, with only two jobs in total, check the box. Do Steps 3 to 4(b) on one form only.
What are the amounts in Step 3?
If your total income is $200,000 or less ($400,000 if married filing jointly), you claim $2,200 for each child under age 17. You claim $500 for each other dependent. The tool does the math.
Can I claim exemption from withholding?
Only if you had no federal income tax liability in 2025 and expect none in 2026. Then no income tax is withheld from your pay. You must give your employer a new form by February 16, 2027.
Is my social security number uploaded?
No. The form is filled on your device. The number stays in the page. It is saved on your device only if you keep it in a profile. If you sign in and keep a profile, it syncs with your account. The number is encrypted there. Read the privacy page.
