Questions
What is a W-9?
A W-9 gives your name, address and tax number to a business that pays you. The business uses it to report what it paid you to the IRS.
Who asks me for a W-9?
A client, a bank or a company that pays you as a contractor. The person who asks is the requester.
Do I send the W-9 to the IRS?
No. Give the form to the requester. The requester keeps it.
Which tax number do I use?
A person or a sole proprietor can use a Social Security number (SSN) or an employer identification number (EIN). A person with no SSN uses an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). Most other entities use an EIN.
I own a single-member LLC. What do I enter?
The IRS ignores this kind of LLC for tax. Enter the owner's name on line 1 and the LLC's name on line 2. Use the owner's tax number.
Do I need to sign it?
Yes. The tool does not sign for you. Print the PDF, sign and date it by hand, or sign it with a tool you trust.
Is my SSN or EIN uploaded?
No. The form is filled on your device. The tax number stays in the page. It is saved on your device only if you keep it in a profile. Read the privacy page.
